6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Learning objectives:
At the completion of this session, learners will be able to:

  • Review an alternative method of self-expression and access to information
  • Describe challenges of motor differences and potential strategies
  • Promote positive practices and the presumption of competence

Program description:

Explore a means of self-expression that is working for some individuals with autism who are non-speaking and who experience motor differences. The role of motor efficiency is often overlooked in autism, but we are learning that it plays a critical role. For this group, a disconnect exists between intention and completing a desired or requested action. With practice, a number of individuals with autism are learning to express their own words via spelling, letter-by-letter, on a stencil, laminated board, or keyboard.
