Lawrence R. Sutton, Ph.D. is a Deacon in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. He is employed as a Psychologist for Wesley Spectrum Services and the former Psychologist/ Manager of the Western Region Office of Bureau of Autism in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980 and has been licensed as a psychologist since 1983.
As a Deacon, he developed and has run a Sacramental preparation and religious education program for children/adolescents touched by autism in the Diocese over the past nine years at the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
His interest in meeting the spiritual needs of people with autism began shortly after his Ordination into the Diaconate in 1999. He accomplishes maximum inclusion by pairing typically developing teens as mentor/teachers with peers who have autism in religious education and social settings. While Dr. Sutton is a Catholic deacon, he encourages people of all faiths to learn and implement his methods in their own settings. He is the author of the newly released book entitled, “How to Welcome, Include, and Catechize Children with Developmental Disabilities, A Parish-Based Approach.
