Dr. Christopher Scott Wyatt is a writer, educator, and researcher. Wyatt was assigned many diagnostic labels through the 1970's, 80's, and 90's. While completing his doctorate degree at the University of Minnesota, neuropsychologists recategorized him as autistic under the DSM-IV, revisiting previous diagnoses of "brain trauma", seizure disorder, and ADD/ADHD. Dr. Wyatt is a visiting assistant professor of business communications at Carnegie Mellon University. His research explores using technology to develop communication skills, especially writing.

Program Description:

Individuals with autism must prepare for self-advocacy: workplaces, schools, and even service providers can't guess what you need. They must also understand life skills are learned, evolve, and include the social skills. Finally, individuals with autism must understand legal rights change in adulthood, and there are fewer supports to help navigate those rights.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn how to approach, assess, and "hand-off" self advocacy
  • Begin and advance life and self-maintenance skills
  • Learn that asking for advice before making a mistake prevents problems, "ignorance" is not a legal or employment defense, and "rights" and "accommodations" vary be personal need
