    About Our Speaker

    Jeremy Flowers is a Licensed Behavior Specialist and consultant with eight years of experience in the intellectual disabilities field. He specializes in positive behavior supports for people with autism and other developmental disabilities. Flowers is the CEO and lead Behavior Specialist Consultant of Able Behavior Supports, an agency that provides enhanced behavior supports to people with autism and intellectual disabilities. The mission of Able Behavior Supports is to deliver the highest quality of service by focusing on the client's goals and involving their natural supports to help them achieve those goals.

    Program Description

    This program will teach caregivers of people with disabilities how to prevent and replace problem behaviors by using positive behavior supports. The audience will learn:

    • How behavior analysts use natural consequences and rearrange settings to promote appropriate behavior.
    • Simple techniques to use every day, such as visual supports, first-then rehearsal, and providing choices.
    • How to prevent aggressive and challenging behavior.

    This program has been developed with caregivers in mind and will be interactive. Audience members will have opportunities to create their own plans, discuss new ideas and share their personal experiences, and ask questions of the speaker.

    Learning Objectives

    At the conclusion of this program, participants will:

    1. Identify behavior patterns and their causes using a behavior analysis approach.

      Recommended audience includes parents and extended families of children with ASD, teachers, paraprofessional and BHRS support staff, guidance counselors, social workers, clinicians, advocates, psychologists, behavior specialists, and all those desiring knowledge about behaviors and autism spectrum disorders.


      Biography:
      Kristi Wees received her Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Penn State University and was one of the inaugural graduates of the Schreyer’s Honors College at Penn State. She went on to complete her Master’s degree studies at UCLA in Chemistry. She has extensive industrial experience as well as hands on medical and clinical experience as she navigated her own daughter’s medical journey back to restored health. She is a passionate advocate for all children no matter what the diagnosis, because she believes that every family deserves the best quality of life together with their child.


      Learning Objectives:

      At the conclusion of this program participants will be able to:

      • Describe how gastrointestinal conditions can impact behavior in children with autism and what those behaviors may look like that could signal a potential underlying gastrointestinal red flag.
      • Identify neurological co-occurring medical concerns in the autistic population and how to advocate for testing and investigation into these concerns.
      • Describe in lay man's terms the potential immune system concerns for an individual with autism and how they can be identified.
      • Define what a mitochondrial disease/dysfunction is and how it relates to an individual with autism and how it can be linked to possible behaviors exhibited by an individual with autism.

      About Our Speaker

      Rebecca Hahn MA, CRC, LPC, of Counseling for Progress, LLC, is a nationally-certified rehabilitation counselor with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from IUP. She has extensive experience working with diverse adolescents and adults. Ms. Hahn has worked in social work, education, psychology, and counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Her professional experience includes: working at a homeless shelter with youth and young adults (ages 12-21), teaching drug and alcohol prevention and intervention to court-ordered juvenile offenders, facilitating psychosocial rehabilitation groups, providing intensive therapy to persons in partial hospitalization, counseling abused youth in Children’s Protective Services’ custody, and providing vocational rehabilitation counseling to individuals with multiple disabilities.

      Program Description
      Is your teen (or client) with ASD overwhelmed with anger and/or anxiety? How can someone engage a teenager who wants absolutely nothing to do with them? This workshop will describe approaches and counseling strategies that diminish resistance, engage adolescents in the therapeutic process, and empower adolescents with mental health diagnoses, drug/alcohol addictions, ASD, and complex needs to progress towards transformation.

      Learning Objectives

      At the conclusion of this program, participants will:

      • Use strategies to reduce “resistance,” establish rapport, and create and maintain close relationships with teenagers;
      • Use specific techniques which effectively engage teenagers in the counseling process;
      • Apply the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification's new code of ethics to the counselor relationship with adolescents
      • Address complex needs, especially needs related to mental health, substance abuse and multiple disabilities.
